What’s involved?
Using a prescription-only medication the National medical weight loss program is part of a medically managed weight reduction program. It is not a magic cure but it can help support you through the difficult times associated with losing weight.
After a face-to-face consultation with the nurse practitioner taking into account what is your body mass index is and your past medical history a decision will be made whether this is the right treatment for you. If it is you will then be shown how to administer the medication at home.
This is a pain-free once a week treatment.
What are the benefits?
Obviously, the number one benefit is losing weight! There may be other benefits that come from this treatment such as improvements in cardiovascular health, a reduction in Type II diabetes, hypertension blood lipid levels, and also a reduction in obstructive sleep apnoea. It’s well known that losing weight will improve all these co-morbidities.
The benefit of this treatment is clinical studies have shown significant improvement in weight loss than just using diet and exercise alone.

This medication is an appetite suppressant containing an active ingredient: GLP-1. GLP-1's are naturally produced by the human body after food is eaten. The body responds to GLP-1 by suppressings the appetite, telling you that you are fuller quicker, therefore, reducing the amount of food that you eat.
As well as reducing your appetite it suppresses the message sent to your brain that makes you look for food when you no longer need it, again significantly reducing the frequency of eating as well as the volume required to satisfy your hunger.
Like all prescription-only medication is there are indications and contraindications. Let's start with the absolute contraindications, these include pregnancy, a history of thyroid cancer, a history of pancreatitis, severe kidney disease, severe heart failure.
GLP-1s are to be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise. It is designed for adults aged 18 to 75 who have a BMI of 30 or above OR a BMI of above 27 when there are health conditions associated with being overweight. These include high blood pressure, elevated blood lipids, sleep apnoea, muscular-skeletal issues.
All medications have side effects, GLP's are no different. Most side-effects associated with this treatment are short-lived and include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, constipation, headaches, and occasionally diarrhoea.
These usually settle within the first few days of starting on the medication, occasionally they may need us to support you with an additional medication such as an antiemetic or an anti-acid. We strongly recommend a Clients stay in touch with us so that we can help them manage any side effects if they were to happen.
Side effects happen and approximately 10% of clients starting on this medication.
This medication is delivered via a painless subcutaneous injection once a week.
The initial dose is administered via a preset dosage in an administration pen. After four weeks this is reviewed and the dose is increased if required.
Initially, all clients are required to complete an online medical assessment form (see the button below,). Once this form is assessed taking into account all your medical history our nurse practitioner will then decide if you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.
A full consultation is then required, this can be done virtually or in person and takes approximately 40 minutes.
As well as being able to offer this medication advice will be given on diet and exercise to ensure clients get optimum results.
