Microsclerotherapy is a gold standard treatment for threads and spider veins. If treated early enough this prevents them from spreading and growing which may make them more difficult to treat.
As with any procedure, some side effects may be experienced. The veins will appear worse to begin with and then will fade away within a few weeks, however, you may also have some temporary redness, swelling, and bruising. All of which are normal and will usually disappear within a few days or a few weeks.
The treatment can be done within the clinic and the client can leave the clinic straight afterward. The treatment does involve several injection points so it is not completely painless however the use of a topical agent can be used to minimise any discomfort.
Clients are required to wear compression stockings for at least 1-2 weeks following treatment and a follow-up appointment is essential around 2 weeks after initial treatment.
It is thought that around 20% of women in their 20’s have thread veins already developed, but this number rises significantly to 50% for those women in their 40’s and again rises to 70% of women in their 70’s.
Several factors increase the likelihood of developing broken veins or spider veins. Being overweight, doing a job that requires you to be on your feet for long periods, and pregnancy are all associated with this disorder.
We also know that we can come up after trauma.
No. Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins that are usually blue or dark purple. They may also be lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance.
Varicose veins develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly. In a healthy vein, blood flows smoothly towards the heart. The blood is prevented from flowing backwards by a series of tiny valves that open and close to let blood through. If the valves weaken or are damaged, the blood can flow backwards and can collect in the vein, eventually causing it to be varicose (swollen and enlarged).
Varicose veins should be treated with a vascular surgeon.
Thread veins, spider veins and broken veins
Thread veins, spider veins, and broken veins are usually very thin but prominent veins just below the skin surface. They tend to branch off one another and create the appearance of part of a spider’s web hence their common name.
Spider and thread veins usually develop as you age, although pregnancy and hormonal changes can affect and provoke development, because of this, they are more common in women than in men.
Lifestyle factors such as being overweight or employed in a job where long periods are required in a standing position also increase the likelihood of their development.
They most frequently appear on the legs and face, the treatments options for both these locations differ
On the legs the gold standard treatment is Microsclerotherapy. On the face, we use IPL (please see our laser page for more information).
